It was a hot day, more than a dozen years ago. Our family vacation wound through Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, and the Badlands—but the ascent up the Rock Tower & Staircase remains one of the clearest memories.

That climb was a visual metaphor for life itself: the unyielding stone beneath our feet, the steepness that seemed endless, the effort it took to keep going. Every step made us stronger—and yet, in its own way, wore us down at the same time.
We were a family who loved the outdoors, but we weren’t seasoned hikers. This wasn’t just a stroll through the woods—it was a true challenge. Muscles ached, lungs burned, and the sun pressed heavy on our shoulders. But with each pause to catch our breath, we caught glimpses of something greater ahead.
And when we finally reached the top, the view wasn’t just beautiful—it was earned. The horizon stretched endlessly, and the wind that met us felt like a blessing.
That day taught me that sometimes the most rewarding destinations require both patience and perseverance. The climb may challenge you, but the summit changes you.
